Street plays organized at different places in Guwahati recently to create awareness about the rights of the domestic workers.
The Centre For Development Initiatives (CDI) in collaboration with the National Domestic Workers Movement (NDWM) organized the International Domestic Workers Day in the city recently. Altogether 250 domestic workers gathered on the occasion which highlighted on the fixation of minimum wages for the domestic workers and also created awareness about their rights and upliftment.
The event was presided over by Reverend John Moolachira, Archbishop of Guwahati, Reverend Sr Philomena Mathew,Superior General,MHMSC, Mrs Bijoy Lakshmi Baruah Gogoi, Commisioner, Disabilities in the state and Deputy labour Commisioner,Dhiren Goswami.
The dignitaries highlighted on improving the skills of domestic workers and also stressed that domestic work should be recognized as any other work and that learning of alternative skills is a must for upliftment of domestic work.”We should work together with the different organizations to make the domestic workers avail their benefits and give the recognition like any other organized labour,”stated deputy labour Commisioner, Dhiren Goswami.
Meanwhile street plays were also performed in parts of the city in collaboration with the Department of MSW, Assam Don Bosco University and some students from University College, Dublin, to raise awareness about the plight of domestic workers in the state. TMN
