Major Durga Malla – the pride of the Gorkhas

Overwhelmed with emotion and charged with enthusiasm, Hawaipurians paid tribute to the heroic son of the Gorkhas

It was a moment of ecstatic joy to all the Gorkhas of Hawaipur, Karbi Anglong when a statue of martyr Major Durga Malla was erected and unveiled recently. Martyr Major Durga Malla, the pride and an inspiration to all the Gorkhas of India was hanged by the British on 25th Aug, 1944. Major Durga Malla was actively involved in India’s freedom movement. He was a major in INA led by Subhash Chandra Bose.
The statue was unveiled by Sri Loknath Upadhyay, Chairman of Gorkha Development Council, Assam in presence of Sri Dhansing Kro, Chairman, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, Diphu. The open meeting was presided over by Sri Keshovmoni Sarma, Principal, Evergreen Academy,Hawaipur.

The unveiling ceremony was graced by all the members of GDC (Gorkha Development Council) and the prominent litterateur and president of Assam Nepali Sahitya Sabha, Sri Dambar Dahal. The freedom fighters – Thong Nokbe, Sabitri Devi and Kanaklata were symbolically represented in the open meeting and were introduced along with a brief history of their dedication towards nation building.

The fund for the erection of this statue was provided by Gorkha Development Council. The Gorkha Development Council, chaired by Sri Loknath Upadhyay has been arduously taking steps towards commemorating the heroic leaders of Gorkha community. The council has relentlessly worked in preserving and maintaining the rich cultural heritage of the Gorkhas in Assam. Besides paying homage to Gorkha stalwarts, it has taken definitive steps in facilitating adequate scope and support to all those students of the Gorkha community who lack financial resources. TMN
